Banned Books Week & World Card-Making Day

This week (September 27-October 3, 2015) is Banned Books Week.  Banned Books Week is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read.  It brings together the entire book community -- librarians, booksellers, publishers, journalists, teachers, and readers of all types -- in shared support of the freedom to seek and express ideas, even those some consider unorthodox or unpopular.

For more information on getting involved with Banned Books Week you can check out the Ideas and Resources webpage (click here).  Find Banned Books Week events (click here).

World Card Making Day is Saturday Oct 3 this year.  It's a great opportunity for friends and families to get together and make a greeting card or two. It is a wonderful event for kids of all ages. With the holiday season coming up, this is a good time to involve the family in making cards before the hectic rush starts.  This is also a great time to make some for retirement centers and hospitals so they are ready to be delivered during the holidays when people in these facilities need a little cheer.  Who doesn't love getting a card!?

World Card Making Day began in 2006 as National Card Making Day. Founded by Paper Crafts magazine to bring card makers together at the beginning of the busiest card-making season of the year, it was first held on October 7, 2006.  It is celebrated annually on the first Saturday in October. It's a day for the card-making community—hobbyists, retailers, and manufacturers—to unite and celebrate the connection and creativity that is the heart of card making.
